Spray Dryer For Herbal Extract
Spray dryers for herbal extract are specialist machines that are used to turn liquid herbal extracts into dry, easily-stored powder forms. A liquid herbal extract is sprayed into a hot gas stream during the spray drying process, which quickly evaporates the liquid and leaves behind a dry powder.
A spray dryer for herbal extract is an innovative technological system to evaporate and dry the liquid herbal extracts into a fine powder form hence retaining its active phytochemical constituents as well as enhancing its shelf life. With increased consumer focus on herbal supplements and products, as well as natural and nutraceuticals, it becomes imperative to retain the original activity, quality, and purity of the products. Among numerous methods applicable to the solid dosage form industries, the pharmaceutical, food, and herbal industries, spray drying has emerged to be the most efficient and accurate in achieving the objectives. They include better product stability, better solubility, and easier handling of the products involved.
Spray dryer for herbal extract can be defined as a technique in which a droplet of a liquid herbal extract is created by atomizing the extract, which is then dried by a hot air flow to form a powder particle. The quick drying process goes a long way in preventing the degradation of heat-sensitive bioactive compounds keeping intact all important nutrients antioxidants and therapeutic attributes inherent in herbs. The final powder can be readily blended into several forms of supplements, especially capsules, tablets, teas, and functional foods.
How Spray Drying Works
The process of spray drying comprises the preparation of the herbal extract. This mostly entails a process of isolating the active compounds in raw herbal substances out of a suitable solvent like water, alcohol, or any other solvent. After the herbal extract has been produced, it has to be pumped into the atomizer of the spray dryer. The atomizer grinds the liquid into a fine spray which gives a large surface area to dry.
Hot air flow varying from 150 to 300 degree Celsius depending on the type of herb processed is introduced into the drying chamber. Analyzing the process, when the droplets contact with the hot air, the solvent begins to evaporate at once and the powder becomes quite homogeneous and dry. The product is horticultural fly ash that is obtained in the form of powder at the base of the drying chamber or cyclones in which particle-air separation occurs. Some of the features characteristic of the system include the use of filters and separators that remove any contaminants from the powder.
One of the advantages of using the spray drying method is that it is highly flexible. Some of the process parameters including air temperature, airflow rate, and feed rate have to be controlled depending on the characteristics of the herbs to be processed. The spray drying process can be additionally adapted to the required specifications for the given product; regardless of working with highly flammable plant oils or delicate extracts, the end product will be of high quality and have uniform characteristics.
